HARD OF HEARING GROUPS

CURRENT COMMUNITY SUPPORT GROUPS

It has been identified that voluntary groups develop from a local need. We assist local communities to establish new hard of hearing and tinnitus groups and provide continuing support to existing groups. This can include a start up grant, complete funding applications, advice and signposting to other organisations.

The groups usually meet on a monthly basis. Their aim is to help members take better control of their hearing loss, provide information and support and gain an understanding of what help and assistive equipment they can and should expect to have access to.

These groups act as a community resource and watchdog for local services for deaf and hard of hearing people. Local support groups can provide direct services, particularly with regard to transporting people with hearing loss to ENT units and providing hearing aid advice. Local organisations can visit groups and give specific talks on relevant subjects.

CHILDREN'S SERVICES

Wales Council For Deaf People actively encourages parents of deaf children to join their local Children’s Hearing Services Working Group (CHSWG) to ensure their child’s needs are addressed.

There is a CHSWG in every health authority area, so there will be one near you. By becoming a parent representative you will be joining a group that includes professional representatives from education, health, social services and the voluntary sector to work together on services designed for deaf children and their families.

By bringing a parent’s perspective to the Working Group you will have the unique opportunity to voice the opinions of what families with deaf children need and want and crucially make a difference to their local provision.

If you would like to join your local CHSWG as a parent representative and get your voice heard, contact us for further information .
