About Us

Welcome to Action Deafness Cymru

We are thrilled to launch our new, unified organisation—the dedicated Welsh division of the national parent charity, Action Deafness, built upon the strong legacy of the Wales Council for Deaf People (WCDP).

Our mission is simple: to champion the rights and independence of the Deaf, DeafBlind, and hard of hearing community across all of Wales.

Whether you're looking for expert Information, Advice, and Guidance (IAG), seeking to learn British Sign Language (BSL), exploring volunteering opportunities, or connecting with our vital Peer Groups, you've come to the right place.

We are committed to breaking down communication barriers and building an inclusive, equitable Wales for everyone. We look forward to working with you!

Layla Karnes

I was born in California in 2005 to British-American parents. I spent many holidays with my grandparents in Bedfordshire roaming their farm. I started figure skating at the age of 3 and transitioned to ice dance when I was 8. When I was 11, I watched my first Deaf dancer perform and was left speechless - inspired to better understand the Deaf culture and language.

I studied American Sign Language through High School and completed two years at university. I first represented Great Britain in 2023 and started learning British Sign Language to better connect and advocate for British Deaf skaters. I have volunteered with Deaf youth interests in sports and hope to work with Deaf athletes at a national and international level.

We’re proud to have Mike Ruddock OBE, former Wales rugby coach and Grand Slam winner, as our Patron!

Mike, who is hard of hearing himself, understands the importance of awareness, accessibility, and breaking down barriers for Deaf and hard of hearing people.

His support helps us champion inclusion and empower communities across Wales.
