
BSL Taster Sessions


BSL Taster Sessions by Action Deafness Cymru are fun, interactive introductions to British Sign Language. They give you the chance to learn basic signs, understand Deaf culture, and build confidence communicating with Deaf people.
Whether you’re an employer, community group, or individual, these sessions help promote inclusion and improve everyday communication. No previous experience needed – just enthusiasm to learn!

BSL Taster Session
Our BSL Taster Sessions offer the perfect, no-pressure introduction to British Sign Language and Deaf Awareness. These three-hour workshops are designed for absolute beginners and are fully led by our expert BSL tutors, including our Lead Tutor, Chaz.
What You Will Learn and Gain:

Your First Signs: You will learn the BSL Fingerspelling Alphabet (the foundation for names and places) and crucial vocabulary for basic greetings like "Hello," "How are you?" and "Thank you."

Essential Communication Skills: We focus on practical, everyday signs and simple phrases to help you feel confident when meeting Deaf or hard of hearing individuals.

Deaf Awareness Training: Gain vital insights into Deaf Culture and understand common communication barriers. You'll leave with practical tips on the best ways to interact with members of the Deaf community, moving beyond simple gestures.

A Fun, Supportive Environment: These sessions are relaxed and highly interactive, offering you a great chance to meet others interested in learning and connect with the wider community.

Find Specialised Introductory BSL Units
BSL 101 F: Introduction to BSL (Frontline Staff)
This unit is specifically designed for frontline staff, customer service representatives, or public-facing employees who have frequent contact with the public.
The course focuses on providing the basic BSL skills and vocabulary necessary to facilitate simple, helpful communication in a customer service or public access setting.

You will learn: Basic greetings, asking and giving simple directions within a building (e.g., "Where is the lift?"), handling short transactions, and requesting clarification (e.g., "Please write that down").

Goal: To enable staff to offer a better, more inclusive service experience for Deaf and hard of hearing customers.
BSL 101 H: Introduction to BSL (Healthcare)
This unit is tailored for healthcare professionals who work in medical environments, such as hospital staff, GP surgery receptionists, or community care workers.
The content is focused on basic BSL skills within a clinical or medical setting.

You will learn: Basic greetings and personal information exchange, health-related vocabulary (e.g., pain, appointment, medication), recognising and using numbers for wards/rooms, and giving simple directions within a hospital or medical centre.

Goal: To help healthcare staff manage simple patient interactions, appointments, and general needs, thereby improving communication and patient safety.
BSL 101 Y: Introduction to BSL (Young People)
This unit is designed for young learners (often under 16) who attend Deaf or mainstream schools and frequently interact with Deaf peers or staff.
The content uses vocabulary and topics relevant to a school, youth club, or social environment.

You will learn: Basic conversation when meeting people, using the manual alphabet (fingerspelling) for names, recognising and using numbers for time/dates, and communicating about school, hobbies, and activities.

Goal: To give young people the fundamental BSL skills needed to communicate with Deaf peers and friends, fostering social inclusion and language acquisition from an early age.

Meet Our Lead BSL Tutor
Hello everyone! I'm Chaz, and I'm proud to introduce myself as the Lead BSL Tutor here at Action Deafness Cymru (ADC).
My passion is teaching, and I lead all our formal British Sign Language training, guiding students through Signature qualifications from Level 1 right up to Level 6. Whether you're just starting your BSL journey or aiming for professional proficiency, I'm here to help you reach your goals.
I also run our popular, shorter sessions, including the BSL Taster sessions and the vital Deaf and DeafBlind Awareness training. These sessions are crucial for building communication skills and fostering greater understanding within our wider community.
